Biological systems, whether naturally occurring or synthetic, are complex collections of parts executing dynamic biochemical reactions. Deciphering the mechanistic operation of these systems requires knowledge of the presence, quantity and activity of different parts through time, ideally from single cells. My interests broadly focus on the development of sensitive measurement technologies to quantitatively describe the mechanistic operation of biological systems. Ultimately, I seek to apply these tools to the assessment of human health and disease. My research specifically focuses on three areas (1) engineering composite materials from biological molecules for use in biotechnology applications, (2) developing signature assays for early detection of human cancer, infection and health assessment, and (3) quantitatively describing how decisions are computed during lymphocyte stimulation and how viral challenge affects autoimmunity and cancer. Achieving these goals will fundamentally advance our capability to formulate quantitative models of dynamic biological systems.
