![]() | I'm Jeremy Gordon and I graduated in the spring from Berkeley High School. Because Berkeley High's science program is one of its best, I got a great introduction to the theory behind chemistry, biology and, this past year, physics. I didn't, however, get much of a chance during those classes to carry out experiments and practice any real lab techniques. I decided pretty early on in high school that I would major in or at least study science or engineering, but I still didn't have too clear a picture of what that would mean. My internship at the Molecular Sciences Institute was helpful to me in figuring out what micro-biology was all about and I learned an incredible amount here. It was certainly a summer well-spent. Next year I'll be a freshmen at Stanford University and I'm glad I've had the experience here at MSI to work from in the future. |

![]() | My name is Tyra Mcray. I graduated from Jonh F. Kennedy High this past school year of 2003 and I will be attending U.C. Davis this fall. My interest is Veterinariay Medicine, but working at MSI, I've learned that a fundamental knowledge of molecular biology is essential for all levels and or types of science. To understand more complex concepts, a knowledge of cellular function on the molecular level is necessary. I've had a rewarding and valuable experience at MSI and I'm sure you will too. |

![]() | My name is Jermaine Deckard. I graduated from Berkeley High School in the class of 2003. I will be attending Cal State University of Los Angeles this fall and plan on majoring in engineering. After completing a course called Intergrated Science, I was introduced to DNA, cells, and the study of the human body. At the Molecular Science Institute, I had the opportunity to see how these concepts related to genomics. My experience at MSI has definitely enhanced my science skills because I had the opportunity to gain hands on experience in the laboratory. I would definitely recommend this internship for future students because you will be amazed at what you'll learn in eight weeks. |

![]() | I went to Granada high school in Livermore -- that's about 40 miles from Berkeley. Despite the lengthy commute, I really couldn't think of any job more exciting that getting to work in a biology lab this summer. This excitement stems from my interest in the biological sciences. Ever since I took my first biology class in high school, I have been excited about the mysterious processes of life. I will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall, and plan to major in molecular and cellular biology. I hope that the hands-on experience I have had here will help me in pursuing my goals at school.During my internship I worked with Dr. Jenya Kroll on yeast evolution. He taught me a plethora of new lab techniques as well as the importance of simple, well-designed experiments. I learned more about the way the genome of Saccharomyces cerevisiae can change than I ever thought was possible. To next year's interns, I can only say one thing: be prepared to learn-do that, and you will find your eight weeks will be a blast. |
